Hopeful for the Future, Grateful for the Past

The time around Thanksgiving is always a gentle reminder of the power of gratitude and the strength in hopefulness.

I’ve heard many people lament 2019. For Share On Purpose, Inc. 2019 represented one of the most challenging periods in our company’s history. The year was just plain hard.

Interestingly enough, our culture was fortified during the most challenging periods in our company’s evolution. And 2019 was no different. Our leaders found strength they didn’t know they had and earned the leadership roles they now proudly hold.

Most of us here are chasing the biggest dream we’ve ever had, and yet this year we were pushed to our limits more than once.

But something inside of us, separately and together, encouraged us to keep going. Although we had much to fear, we always found a reason to hope.

Maybe it’s the vision we hold or the purpose behind it. Maybe’s its intuition or some other divine force. Possibly, it’s the power of perseverance deep within our soul.

Whatever it is, hopefulness is what we choose.

Hopeful is defined as “feeling or inspiring optimism about a future event” – which is how we see our company, regardless of the challenges we experience along the way.

This is important because HOPE is the key to achieving a dream. We must be inspired about a future vision, no matter what the present holds.

Most of us were taught to use external events, as an indication of success. As kids, we’ve heard questions like: “Did you win?” “Did you get an A in your test?” We’ve learned to evaluate our dreams, based on external measures of success.

This doesn’t work. To achieve a dream, we must look past our present reality to the hopefulness of that very dream, while being grateful for what is.

Because I faced extreme poverty and abuse as a child, I developed the power of hopefulness early on, which helped me to look past my immediate challenges to the sheer will to survive.

Rather than look at what was happening for hope, I learned how to shift my perspective to the dream of something different. I saw things the way I wanted them to be, rather than how they were at that moment. I learned to look for the good in everything. And… that filled me with hope.

Today, that hopefulness is now pervasive in our company culture. No matter what happens, our core leaders are able to shift their perspective to the good that can come from the challenge, rather than dwell on the challenge itself.

The truth is, we learn from each challenge we face, so difficulties are part of our growth, and part of how we achieve our dream. For Share On Purpose, challenges are simply a step on the path to reach our ultimate goal – creating a place of possibilities.

It may sound utopian to some, but it’s who we are at our core.

I was reminded of the power of choosing hope recently while watching an amazing movie, The Art of Racing in the Rain. On the surface, the movie is about a race car driver and his very special dog. However, look a little deeper, and you’ll see that the movie is really about the power to focus on what you want to create, rather than let life’s circumstances (in this case rain), control you. It’s one of the most inspiring movies I’ve seen about the power of hope.

As we near Thanksgiving, I’m most grateful for hope.

– Hope that things will improve in our nation

– Hope that there are better times ahead

– Hope that we are a beacon of “possibilities”

– Hope that we attract the best talent

– Hope for profitable growth

– Hope for powerful new concepts to launch

Perseverance: The Key to Career Success

The ability to persevere through challenges and obstacles is the key to career success. However, in many cases, it is easier said than done. So, what stops us?

Fear is the number one thing that keeps us from having what we want.

Now I’m not talking about the kind of fear that keeps us from walking down a dark alley in the middle of the night. What I’m referring to are the fears that keep us from living, growing, achieving – such as fear of failure, fear of judgment, fear about the opinions of others, and for many even the fear of success.

As a result of this irrational fear, we convince ourselves that there is nothing we can do to improve our situation, e.g. that we don’t have what we need, we aren’t smart enough, or it’s too risky. So, we don’t do anything and accept where we are.

The truth is: when we really want something, there is always a way to overcome fear.

Truly successful people have two things in common:

They believe in a dream, vision, or goal

They believe in this so much that they will do ANYTHING to reach it. As a result, they tap into the invisible and unlimited power of perseverance. Perseverance is inside each of us, but only a few choose to access it. Successful people harness the power of perseverance by simply refusing to quit. This is easier than you might think. Those who achieve their dreams DECIDE that failure is not an option and, as a result, they persevere.

The second thing successful people do is face each fear head-on

They call the fear out from the dark recesses of the subconscious mind. By naming a fear and facing it, we shine a light on our innate ability to overcome that which we fear.

How to Push through the Fear

We don’t always recognize what it is that is holding us back, which is why so many tend to settle for less than what they’re worth. We all have fears. Some we might be aware of and some we might not. To recognize fear and face it head-on, the process works like this:

DECIDE on a dream or goal

The biggest issue with fear is that we don’t decide what we want.

FEEL the fear

When you think about your dream or goal, you WILL feel fear. This does not mean that you won’t get it, rather it means that you’re afraid you won’t. Do not let this fear dissuade you.

FACE the fear

In order to grow, we simply have to face the fear. Look at it, feel it, make it conscious; bring it into your awareness.

ACCESS perseverance

When we face the fear, we are able to access the power of perseverance to PUSH through fear and resistance. Just search your body for the feeling of perseverance (it will feel the exact opposite of fear).

The key is to PUSH through fear. Name it. Move forward in spite of how it feels (because it doesn’t feel good at first). Decide that failure is not an option. Once you do this, you’ll quickly feel the energetic sensation of perseverance. As you use that energy, you will find yourself growing, and then your ability to face the fear grows with it.

Collaborating to Win

Be honest, do you ever take on too much? Too often we try to accomplish everything ourselves and end up taking on more responsibility than is necessary.

As a serial entrepreneur, and a leader of aspiring executives who are also entrepreneurial, breaking the habit of trying to “go it alone” has been paramount. Leaders who do not master the art of collaboration are overworked, get limited results, or in some cases, both.

Collaboration as a discipline is not well understood because the corporate management system by which most professionals start their career is deeply flawed. This translates into individuals and departments working independently, and in some cases against each other, rather than collaborating to win collectively. Measuring What Matters: Achieving Client & Career Success

Getting to ROI

For most companies, sales and marketing expenses represent the largest non-product/service related overhead costs, yet executives rarely understand how to measure the value of these costs, other than by asking “did revenue increase?”

By the time it’s clear whether or not a marketing/sales expense actually generated revenue, it is unfortunately too late, because the cost was already incurred. In most companies, this lack of quantifiable and predictable results (ROI) occurs quarter after quarter and year after year.

At Promote and IGNITE, ROI isn’t something we “hope” to get. It’s something that is planned, measured and guaranteed.

Since we are committed to ROI, consistently reviewing metrics, assessing data, and making adjustments is essential to stay on track. What is not productive however, is spinning wheels and investigating data that won’t serve the ultimate goal – an ROI for clients.

Here are the top three metrics to measure in order to determine if marketing activities are generating results.

No. 1: Revenue Multiple (the best indication of ROI) 

The first and most important metric to track is the revenue multiple, or revenue-based ROI. Dollars earned should equate to a multiple of the dollars spent.

The rule of thumb here is that a new program should generate greater than 2X (two times) the revenue of the cost of the program and do so fairly quickly. So, if your new lead generation program costs $15,000, in its first 90 days it should generate $30,000 in quantifiable revenue, period, end of story.

Over time, the program should increase its multiple to a greater than 5X revenue increase for every dollar spent on the sales or marketing program.

For B2B companies with a longer sales cycle, this metric is more difficult to measure, so it would be wise to use what is known as “Pipeline ROI.”

No. 2: Net Profit Ratio

For smaller businesses, using a net profit ratio is critical, as not all demand generation initiatives result in profitable revenue. Growth-funded growth techniques measure the actual profit generated from the sales and marketing program (as well as the revenue generated) to ensure the company is investing in sales and marketing proportionate to profit generation.

Taking a growth-funded growth mindset is critical for smaller brands, like the IGNITE clients, who want to grow quickly, but responsibly. Once the ratio is established, only a portion of the net profit is reinvested into new sales and marketing programs. This metric ensures profitable growth, rather than growth for growth’s sake.

No. 3: Cost of Acquisition

This metric should be customized for each sales and marketing activity and tracked intensely, as it is the best predictor of efficient demand generation strategies long-term. There are three metrics to measure for increasing efficiency of demand generation:

  • Cost Per Lead
  • Cost Per Opportunity
  • Cost Per Sale
